Prof. J.C. Grutters MD PhD

Prof. Jan C. Grutters is Professor of Interstitial Lung Diseases at Utrecht University, Head of the ILD Centre of Excellence at St. Antonius Hospital, and President of the World Association for Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders (WASOG). He is internationally recognized for his expertise in sarcoidosis, interstitial lung diseases (ILD), pulmonary fibrosis, familial ILD and ultra-rare lung diseases.

Prof. Grutters studied Medicine at Radboud University Nijmegen and completed his specialist training in Respiratory Medicine at St. Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein and University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). In 2001, he was awarded a European Respiratory Society (ERS) Research Fellowship at Imperial College London and the Royal Brompton Hospital. This work resulted in his PhD thesis, Genetic Polymorphisms and Phenotypes in Sarcoidosis.

Since 2002, he has served as pulmonologist at St. Antonius Hospital, where he leads the ILD Centre of Excellence, one of Europe's largest referral centers for interstitial lung diseases, providing care for more than 4,000 ILD patients annually. He is also affiliated with UMC Utrecht as a member of the Lung Transplant Team. In 2010, he was appointed Professor of Interstitial Lung Diseases at Utrecht University.

His clinical and scientific work focuses on improving the diagnosis, prognostication and treatment of patients with sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis and other interstitial lung diseases. His research interests include biomarkers, genetics, precision medicine and the development of novel therapeutic strategies. He has a particular interest in familial pulmonary fibrosis and ultra-rare ILDs, including lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP).

Prof. Grutters has supervised more than 30 PhD candidates and authored over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters. He is a frequent invited speaker and chair at international scientific congresses and expert meetings.

In addition to his clinical, research and educational activities, Prof. Grutters plays an active role in national and international scientific organizations. He currently serves as President of WASOG, and a member of numerous scientific advisory boards and expert committees. Through these roles, he contributes to advancing research, education and patient care in sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung diseases worldwide.
